EUDEC Responsibles

From the Guidance Document:

''Article 3:70 Responsibles

The purpose of introducing “Responsibles” into the EUDEC structure is to clarify and emphasise the opportunities that members already have to contribute and develop their own interests and passions for the good of the organisation and democratic education in general. The central task of Council is to ensure that the essential core functions of EUDEC are sustained, if necessary but not necessarily from within Council itself. Council will also coordinate and facilitate the work of the Responsibles while ensuring that it does not run counter to the aims of EUDEC.

Council maintains a list of the Responsibles and their areas of responsibility in a single document.

Additionally, workgroups or regional groups have to have a Responsible. Responsibles can form workgroups or regional groups.

Responsibles make an annual report to the AGM. ''

At the 2017 AGM we approved a change to EUDEC’s formal structure. In order to clarify responsibilities within the organisation and give all interested members the opportunity and the authority to work on their respective projects, we introduced the role of Responsibles. In short, a Responsible is somebody who has responsibility for something.
Of course, there have always been lots of people who were responsible for projects within EUDEC, the only difference is that now, there is a clear role-description, a written agreement and a short report at the AGM.
The clear name and role description gives the Responsibles authority when dealing with people outside of EUDEC (e.g. interested persons, politicians, journalists etc).
The written agreement with the clearly defined (by the Responsible, approved by council) scope of responsibility will give them autonomy to act within this scope without having to get every individual step approved.
The AGM report will ensure that everybody stays up to date and the written agreement is kept (or amended, if necessary).

For you, this can mean the following things:

If you’re part of a regional chapter, find out who your regional Responsible is.

If you have something you would like to work at for EUDEC, please get in touch with us to check whether this is in keeping with the current direction of EUDEC. If yes, write a short description of what you would like to do, how you are going to achieve it, and what you need. You can work by yourself or find a group of people to work with. You will then sign the written agreement about the description and be made the Responsible for the area.

If you are a member of a workgroup, please discuss whether you want your elected chair to automatically become the responsible for the workgroup, or whether you want to elect a new Responsible. If you haven’t got an elected chair, you need to elect somebody who becomes the responsible for the workgroup. Get in touch with us so that we can finalise the written agreement and list you as the Responsible.

If you would like to support us but are unsure of what exactly you want to do, please have a look at the list of Areas of Responsibility that are currently in need of a Responsible. If there is an area that nobody wants to take responsibility for, this probably means that it’s not important for our organisation right now, and now work will be carried out in that area.
